New Kid on the Block

At 30, Guirec Soudee (freelance.com) is a freshman in the IMOCA class having just dipped his toe into its fast running waters this year. His voyage towards the Vendee Globe is dominated by a fairy-tale image of a young man and a chicken, Monique to be precise, on the high seas. But make no mistake, after 45,000 miles and an incredible sixth place in this Vendee Arctique - Les Sables d’Olonne, this kid’s for real.

The Route of the Vendée Arctique

This will be the first time that the Vendée Globe skippers will attempt to round Iceland by crossing the Arctic Circle. They will set off from Port Olona to sail around Iceland, before returning to Les Sables d'Olonne to complete this innovative and demanding 3,500 mile course.

As the first qualifying race for the Vendée Globe 2024, the Vendée Arctique will allow the IMOCA Class skippers to test their boats in conditions similar to those of the Vendée Globe by confronting the seas of the Far North single-handed.

It is a demanding course, which will involve the skippers negotiating the wind shifts and acceleration of the wind due to Iceland's relief. The sailors will have to expect a complex race in terms of manoeuvres and sail changes.
